Google Rich Snippets

Add product rating structured data to your product pages, so Google can show star ratings in search results.

Google Rich Snippets adds each product's rating to its product page as structured data, so Google can show star ratings next to the page in search results. Google decides whether, and when, it shows them.

Navigate to Settings → Syndication → Google Rich Snippets to manage Google Rich Snippets.

How Google Rich Snippets works

Google Rich Snippets is off until you turn it on. Then Cevoid adds Product structured data with an AggregateRating to your product pages: the product's average rating, from 1 to 5, and its number of ratings, star-only ratings included. Individual reviews aren't part of it, and company reviews never add structured data.

PlatformHow the rating reaches the page
ShopifyCevoid writes each product's rating and number of ratings to Shopify's standard product rating metafields. The Product rating block of the Cevoid: Reviews Platform app puts the stars and the structured data in the page's HTML
Other platformsA Dynamic Product Rating widget, or a product page review list that shows its rating summary, adds the structured data in the shopper's browser. A developer can also render it on your server

Google reads structured data in the page's HTML more reliably than structured data added with JavaScript.

Cevoid adds no structured data for a product with no ratings, and none from sample reviews. In the browser, it also adds none when the page already has rating structured data for the product, such as from your theme, or when more than one product shows a rating on the page, such as on a collection page.

Turn on Google Rich Snippets

Turn on Google Rich Snippets once for your workspace. On Shopify, Cevoid asks you to authorize it to write ratings to each store that has the Reviews app.

  1. Navigate to Settings → Syndication → Google Rich Snippets
  2. Enable Enable Google Rich Snippets
  3. Click Save changes
  4. Click Authorize and enable, if Authorize Shopify review aggregate ownership opens

Authorizing lets Cevoid write each product's rating and number of ratings to Shopify's standard product rating metafields, replacing the values there, such as a previous review app's. Each store is filled on its own: see Shopify storefronts. Then, on Shopify, add the Product rating block: see Add the Product rating block on Shopify.

If Cevoid pauses delivery for every workspace, the page shows Delivery temporarily paused. Your setting is kept, but Cevoid adds no structured data until delivery resumes.

Add the Product rating block on Shopify

On Shopify, the Product rating block puts the rating and its structured data in your product pages' HTML. Add exactly one to your product template. The Product reviews block never adds structured data.

  1. Navigate to Settings → Syndication → Google Rich Snippets and click Open theme editor next to your store under Storefronts. The Shopify theme editor opens on your product template.
  2. Click Add block in the product's main section
  3. Search for Cevoid and select Product rating
  4. Optional: Paste the ID of a Dynamic Product Rating widget in Widget ID (optional)
  5. Click Save

Without a widget ID, the block shows the rating from the metafields, such as ★ 4.8 (128 ratings). With one, the widget's stars replace it once they load. Before you authorize the store, the block shows the rating already in those metafields, such as a previous review app's, and adds no structured data. To add the block from a widget instead, see Embed review widgets.

Rich snippets on other platforms

On platforms other than Shopify, your review widgets add the structured data once Google Rich Snippets is on. Add a Dynamic Product Rating widget, or a Dynamic Product Reviews widget that shows its rating summary, to your product pages: see Embed review widgets.

The widget adds the structured data with JavaScript, so the market health check rates the page Best effort. To put the rating and structured data in the page's HTML instead, a developer can render them on your server with Cevoid's Storefront API.

Shopify storefronts

On Shopify, Storefronts on Settings → Syndication → Google Rich Snippets lists each connected store that has the Reviews app. Each store progresses on its own, and connecting a store never authorizes Cevoid to write to it.

StatusWhat it means
Confirmation requiredCevoid isn't authorized to write this store's ratings yet. Click Authorize
WaitingThe store is queued to be filled
In progressCevoid is writing the store's ratings. Latest check shows how many products are done
CompletedEvery product's rating is written
FailedWriting the ratings failed. Click Retry
ReadyThe store is authorized, with nothing in progress

Restored shows when Cevoid restored its authorization after the Reviews app was reinstalled. Open theme editor opens the store's product template in the Shopify theme editor.

After authorization, Cevoid updates a product's metafields as its ratings change, and checks every store's values each hour. If another app overwrites them, the hourly check restores Cevoid's values, and the market health check shows Shopify aggregate values were overwritten.

Check your market health

Market health, on the Google Rich Snippets page, checks a sample of live product pages in each market for the rating and its structured data. It checks your pages, not Google's index. Cevoid runs it once a day while Google Rich Snippets is on, and when you click Run check.

  1. Navigate to Settings → Syndication → Google Rich Snippets
  2. Click Run check under Market health
  3. Click View next to a market's findings. Findings and remediation opens.
  4. Optional: Click Rich Results Test next to a page to test it in Google's tool

In each market, the check visits up to 3 product pages with ratings: the one with the most ratings, the most recently updated one, and one that changes every day.

Findings show on this page and as the status of Google Rich Snippets on Settings → Syndication, such as On · Healthy or On · Needs attention. Cevoid doesn't email them.

Turn off Google Rich Snippets

Turn off Google Rich Snippets to stop Cevoid adding rating structured data to your product pages.

  1. Navigate to Settings → Syndication → Google Rich Snippets
  2. Disable Enable Google Rich Snippets
  3. Click Save changes

On Shopify, Cevoid keeps your stores' rating metafields up to date, so the Product rating block still shows the stars.
